CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Liam Elliott’s farm is lavish and massive. She isn’t sure how many barns and buildings they passed before reaching the main house, which Cole explains sits in the middle of the man’s property. That can only mean that there is a ton of land and property that they haven’t seen.
They park on the gravel right out front of the log-sided, lodge-style home, which has to be at least ten thousand square feet in size. The grand door opens and a woman welcomes them in. Stepping inside, she looks into a foyer that’s bigger than the size of her whole apartment. Cathedral ceilings loom overhead with a nice chandelier hanging above them. There are leather chairs for seating on both sides of the walls.
The lady leads them into a room with a beautiful view through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The landscape is spectacular with the white of the snow smoothly blanketing everything.
“Beautiful,” she says to Cole, who’s standing with his hand around hers. “But a bit much for me,” she whispers to him.
“I always did think this was too much house for the old guy,” he tells her with a smile. She feels him turn around at the sound of a group entering the room.
“There they are!” Liam shouts. Probably because it’s the only way to be able to communicate in this big house. He comes over to shake the men’s hands. Liam bends down and holds her face between his palms like before and kisses her lightly on the cheek.
“More beautiful than the last time I saw you,” Liam says. “You remind me of Jannie. Jan Howard. That’s these boys’ grandmother. She was so lively.”
“Thank you, Liam. Your home is beautiful. It looks very...cozy,” she says. The sound of Liam’s cackle immediately echoes through the large room.
“She hates it!” Liam says to the group. She looks sheepishly at Cole.
“You can be honest, Frankie. I don’t like it much myself. Way too much house for me. But my wife, she was into all of this. Come here,” he says. “Let me introduce you.” He puts his hand on her shoulder. “This is my oldest son, Junior. That’s his wife, Rosie, and their baby, Abigail.”
Frankie introduces herself and shakes the couple’s hands. “Your baby is adorable.”
Liam moves her on. “This is my youngest son, Jason.”
She shakes his hand and Liam moves her on to the stunning beauty standing next to Jason. “This is my niece Madison.” The beautiful cashier they met their first day in town.
“Madison,” she says. “We’ve met! Well, sort of.” Madison smiles at her and shakes her hand briefly. Tall, blonde, beautiful, and rich, she thinks to herself, suddenly feeling insufficient.
Madison reaches out and touches the key pendant on her necklace. “Very beautiful,” she says with a sweet smile.
“Oh, thank you. It was a gift.” She takes the pendant from Madison’s fingers and lets it hang again. Madison takes her eyes off of the piece and looks over her head. She turns around to see Cole shaking hands and greeting the men with familiarity.
